Bwana’s Top Ten DVD’s He Bought in 08

1.  Vampyr- Criterion.  Sure, I’m getting all arty but this is a special flick. Not for everybody. Don’t expect a fast paced flick. More like a troubling dream after too much Nyquil.

2.Hammer Films: Icons of Horror Collection

The Curse of the Mummy’s Tomb

Scream of Fear

The Two Faces of Dr. Jekyll

The Gorgon

My personal fave is THE GORGON but the others are cool too. Who doesn’t love a good Mummy picture?

3.NIGHT GALLERY Season 2

Finally Season 2 comes out. Yeah, they’ve aged and some are weak but this set does have some of my favorites like “Lindemann’s Catch” and that weird episode with the broach that turns into a blood drinking monster. The opening of NG scared the crap outta me as a kid.

4. DOOMSDAY-Blu Ray

The best Italian knock off of THE ROAD WARRIOR/ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK ( not directed by an Italian). Rhona Mitra is hot. Great drive in flick.

5. CHAMBER OF HORRORS/BRIDES OF FU MANCHU

A great double feature that Best Buy had as an exclusive. Cheap too. CHAMBER OF HORRORS has a guy  with a stump hand that he screws different weapons into. It also has a “fear flasher” and a “horror horn” to let you know when the scary stuff is coming. BRIDES has Christopher Lee as Fu Manchu. That should be enough right there.  Both of these haven’t been on dvd in the US till now.

6. PLANET OF THE APES BLU RAY COLLECTION

Obviously. I’ve only watched the first two so far but they look good good enough to make you forget the remake directed by whats his face, Tim Scissorhands with Paula Abdul. CONQUEST and BATTLE have new director’s cuts.51nsee-yn3l_ss500_

7. THE NAKED PREY-Criterion

Directed by and starring Cornel Wilde as Man, who is pursued by African natives in the savannah. Mostly silent but completely cool. Pretty much the coolest post war pulp action put on screen, right down to the gruesomely bizarre tortures that the natives inflict on the others in Man’s party. What do they do with that guy they clay bake anyway? If it were made now, the pc crowd would rip its balls off and give us some watered down, pussified Benetton ad dog shit. I wanna go watch it again now. You should too.

8. POST APOCALYPTIC TRIPLE FEATURE

2019: AFTER THE FALL OF NEW YORK

THE NEW BARBARIANS

1990: BRONX WARRIORS

I love the Italian knock offs. Man, do I miss them.  These three are all of the “Escape from The Road Warriors of New York” variety. Are they great? No. Are they cool? Yes. One by Sergio Martino, two by Enzo Castellari. And cheap too. Stars like Fred Williamson, Vic Morrow and George Eastman.

9. THE MIST -Blu Ray

For some reason this bombed but it’s pretty fucking cool. I can’t see how any big bug monster movie fan was disappointed although some people seem to whine about the effects, like this person: I’m so glad The Mist got its shittiest effects out of the way first- Mainefolks’ first encounter with the enemy- those tentacles- looked pretty bad. We’ll call her “FG”.  Anyway, the effects aren’t shitty and there’s lots of cool monsters.  The disc looks awesome and you get the b& w version too. The spiders are similar to THE OUTER LIMITS Zanti Misfits. There’s a lot of “what the fuck is that” moments. People whine about the ending too but they’re mostly idiots or some kind of new moron, you know like the kind you see on TV.

10. RODAN/WAR OF THE GARGANTUAS

Great double feature with both subtitled and dubbed versions. Rodan was out several years ago but Gargantuas is new to U.S. dvd. Too bad they never used the Gargantuas again as they’re pretty cool and unique.

Ok, here’s one for the pc crowd to cry about due to the treatment of the snakes. You get the same knee jerk reaction from the people who were appalled by THE FOOD OF THE GODS. Yeah, you shouldn’t kill real animals for a movie (unless you eat them) but pull up your panties and be a man. Things were different then. Here’s a great transfer of a great William Grefe drive in picture. The kind of regional drive in fare that no longer exist. There’s a commentary by Grefe as well. The movie itself is essentially WILLARD with snakes. I somehow managed to get my mom to take me to this at Joy’s Airline Cinema in New Orleans a long time ago. I haven’t heard the commentary yet but have heard others by Grefe that were very entertaining. He’s one of the last of his kind.
