BWANA’S TOP TEN COMICS OF 2008

1. JONAH HEX

Great stories, cool art by guys like the legendary Jordi Bernet. Darwyn Cooke did a great issue. Reads like the greatest Italian westerns never made.

2. THUNDERBOLTS

sick and twisted. NORMAN OSBORN as the hero (sort of). He’s completely insane and totally cool. He remarks that his Goblin costume still smells like Gwen Stacy. Really funny. It’s even got incest,  masochism and Venom seems to eat a fair amount of people. tboltsrim001

3.LONE RANGER

Cool retelling of the legend. Gritty action. The ranger doesn’t come off as a boy scout, just pissed. Tonto is more pissed. But it remains true to the spirit. Great villain in Cavendish.

 4. THE WALKING DEAD

Yeah, I’m tired of zombies too but this kid Kirkman makes some nice character based stories with lots of unexpected twists.

The “Governor” makes for a sleazy, smart villain. He keeps a toothless zombie young girl as a pet. I’m gonna assume he fucks it. Ultimately sad and brutal.

5. THOR

Tough title to write but J. Michael Straczynski makes it seem fresh while keeping it involved in the Marvel Universe. It has a lot of weight and seems like it’s all gonna end in Shakespearean tragedy for Thor. Heavy is the head that wears the crown. Loki as a woman is very evil.

6. HULK

Really fun to read book from Jeph Loeb, Art Adams, Frank Cho  and others. There’s a cool Red Hulk as well as Banner. I don’t know who the ‘Rulk” is but I like him. He’s a real smart ass. Lots of babes like Ms.Marvel, Valkyrie, and She Hulk drawn by Cho with wonderfully large tits. Issue 9 looks to be the best yet as Rulk fights She Hulk and her Lady Liberators. Just awesome.

Has been consistently great since Hal Jordan returned but the highlite for me was Hal beating Sinestro without the ring by pummeling him with a 2 x 4.

8. THE INCREDIBLE HERCULES

Who knew? Never gave much thought to Hercules, the Marvel version, but this book was a surprise. He’s a regular Joe who likes booze, broads, fistfights, broads and has a sense of humor. His sidekick is the teenaged Amadeus Cho who happens to be the fifth smartest guy on the planet. The book is funny and easy to read while it also manages to weave classical mythology into it’s storylines. The current arc has Herc banging hottie Namorita while fighting a hostile takeover, corporate style, of the greek pantheon. Lots of humor comes from the fact that Greek Herc is not banging his “erosmenos” Cho.

9. SIMPSONS

Comics from TV shows usually suck or so I would think if I had read one but THE SIMPSONS doesn’t. Perhaps the best thing is it assumes you are a knowledgeable fan so they don’t hesitate throwing in jokes and references from past seasons. Also since Fox cut several minutes out of the show years back, they haven’t had the time to do the great “b” story gags but that’s not a problem in the comic. The annual TREEHOUSE OF HORROR issue is beyond cool. This past Halloween they did a great and accurate send up of both FRANKENSTEIN CONQUERS THE WORLD and WAR OF THE GARGANTUAS.

10. CAPTAIN AMERICA

Ed Brubaker has really given new life to Captain America, even though he killed Steve Rogers off. James “Bucky” Barnes is the new Captain and the book is a great action story along the lines of a great espionage/covert war movie. Never boring and really smart . The Black Widow co-stars along with the Falcon and SHIELD. I imagine it’s gonna get real ugly real soon as Norman Osborne is now in charge. Recent issues have featured my favorite savate master BATROC zee Leaper. It’s not what you would expect from a Captain America book as it’s not a clear cut US vs. evildoers, but  a lot more gray. I like that Captain has a .45 and a big knife. As always, the Red Skull is around(sort of).

Honorable Mention: ZORRO, NOVA, JUSTICE SOCIETY, JUNGLE GIRL, CONAN, NEW AVENGERS, IMMORTAL IRON FIST

Lots of Marvel on the list, but fucking DC needs to step it up. Turning BATMAN over to Grant Morrison was a huge mistake. While he can be great, too often Morrison seems to be showing off for no reason. The death of Bruce Wayne, what the fuck was that? How did they make it so lame? He dies in an explosion after issues of goofy shit that seemed to exist only so Morrison could dazzle us with his knowledge of dopey silver age Batman stories. Lazy. If you don’t have any new ideas, digging through back issues so you can bring back goofy characters is no way to go. The Gaucho? Did Batman really need a son named Damien? Not all of it was bad, mainly the end. And FINAL CRISIS is confusing and I’m so fucking tired of the New Gods I could puke back issues of NFL SUPERPRO. Remember him? I can’t even tell what the fuck is going on in GOTHAM AFTER MIDNIGHT. I’m hoping JASON TODD becomes the new Batman as he looks like he could be a little nuts and may even shoot some people. Let Batman go back to his twin .45 roots and forget about the Joker after the regrettable KILLING JOKE. Why they just accepted the Joker being a failed comedian I have no fucking idea. How about no Joker origin, the way it was meant to be. And for fuck’s sake make Jim Corrigan the Spectre again. And Vic Sage as the Question.
