TOP TEN COMIC COMPILATIONS I, BWANA, BOUGHT IN ’08

In no order and not necessarily published in 08, just bought by me; accursed mountebank, disgraced Dragoon, condemned rake and damn, dirty ape -BWANA.

1. TOMB OF DRACULA OMNIBUS VOL 1

todrac_omni_v1_hc_mediumEasily one of the best comic series of the seventies. The classic creator lineup of Wolfman and Colan was set with issue 7 and was every bit as consistent  as the more heralded Lee-Kirby Fantastic Four. Better than any current book.tod008

2. THE MONSTER OF FRANKENSTEIN by Dick Briefer

51m9z09me7l_ss500_

This is really cool. I’d buy it if I were you. I especially like that Frankenstein not only kills a bunch of guys, he tends to break them against hard objects. Frank makes it to America, a lost dinosaur plateau, falls for an ugly chick, fights assorted ghouls, mummies, werewolves, a whale, hell, all kinds of stuff. The art is really unique and grotesque in a way. There’s even a chapter called “Death O’clock”. If you like 50’s horror comics ( and if you don’t then what the fuck man? Wouldn’t you be better off somewhere else? Like France? maybe Canada?) check it out. Very original.

3. THE CREEPY ARCHIVES VOL 1 & 2

CREEPY was pretty scary stuff when I was eight or so. I knew it was more adult than the usual House of Mystery and House of Secrets I usually read. Classic Frazetta covers and his great “Werewolf” story.

Contains the first ten issues of the classic series. The first seventeen issues are the best with Archie Goodwin as editor. They even reprinted the ads- “Who else wants a live monkey?”.

DARK HORSE has done a bang up job.

4. CAPTAIN AMERICA OMNIBUS

This arc written by Ed Brubaker is just amazing. I think people who wouldn’t be caught dead reading  Captain America would be surprised at how well the story is crafted, including the tricky and tragic death of Steve Rogers.  The story skips around in time from WW II through various other conflicts as the Winter Soldier is introduced and Roger’s past catches up with him.  Guest stars Nick Fury, Sharon Carter, Namor , the other Invaders, the Falcon, even Jack Monroe. Just brilliant stuff. Hard hitting and smart. The omnibus itself is issues 1-25 and a couple of specials and is a bargain at 47 bucks (currently). I imagine people think Captain America is all gung ho USA propaganda, but it’s a lot more complicated.

5. THE DEMON

I always liked  THE DEMON and KAMANDI the best out of Kirby’s early 70’s DC stuff, probably because it helped me forget the awfulness of SUPERMAN’S PAL JIMMY OLSEN (shudder) and THE FOREVER PEOPLE.  It had Baron Von Evilstein for fuck’s sake! Kirby has a pretty forgiving fanbase as I’m sure somewhere there’s a guy who thinks DEVIL DINOSAUR is an unsung masterpiece of sequential art. 513wh0zcsal_ss500_

6. THE RAMPAGING HULK

I put this on here because everybody hates it. But at least theses reprints from the b & w magazine are available, even without the controversial near gay rape of Banner (seriously).

rampaginghulk01Sadly, I doubt Marvel has the balls to reprint issue 23 of THE RAMPAGING HULK. Prove me wrong Marvel!

7. ACTION HEROES VOL 1 and 2 -DC ARCHIVES

These reprints of Ditko‘s Charlton stories are awesome silver age stuff. Vol 1 is all Captain Atom while Vol 2 has the Blue Beetle and The Question. Ditko could really tell a story with his art.

8. DC SHOWCASE PRESENTS: ENEMY ACE

The great adventures of Hans von Hammer by Kanigher and Kubert. Dogfights, honor, death. von Hammer could really not be any cooler. Never did decide if the wolf was real.

9. DAREDEVIL OMNIBUS

Written by Brian Michael Bendis.

Really great crime fiction. As good as anything in film or novels. Brutal gangland noir.

10. SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN REPRINTS

Man it was great to see these again. As a kid you could always count on SAVAGE SWORD for great action and the occasional titties. Great stories, art and priced cheap. All the sex and violence you need in your sword and sorcery. I love Conan, by Crom!

  1. Damn, so many great titles to buy…I did get The Demon and Omac this year, along with the most awesome Devil Dinosaur! I also have the first 2 Creepy books on hold at work.

That Frankenstein looks fucking amazing…and it’s a sin I haven’t picked up Tomb or that Ditko Action Heroes.

I keep hearing how fucking great Cap is, I guess I need to read the damn thing already…
